Tree removal

Hazardous leaners, storm-split trunks, dead or dying trees, and the ones planted too close to a foundation or roof line twenty years ago.

When removal is actually the answer

We would rather prune a tree than take it down, and we will tell you when that is the better call. Removal earns its place in a few specific situations.

A trunk that has split, a tree leaning further each season, major deadwood over a roof or a drive, root damage against a foundation, or a species that was the wrong choice for the spot in the first place. Bradford pear is the most common example in this market — builders planted it heavily and it fails at the crotch predictably.

If a tree is simply too big or too messy for your liking but structurally sound, say so and we will quote it, but we will also tell you what thinning it would look like instead.

How a removal runs

  1. We walk it with youGeoff looks at the drop zone, the access, and what is underneath — beds, irrigation, fence line, pool — and gives you the number before anything starts.
  2. We protect the groundSprinkler heads get marked, beds get covered, and we plan where sections land before the first cut.
  3. We take it in sectionsAnything near a structure comes down in controlled pieces on ropes rather than being felled. Open yards may be felled if there is genuinely room.
  4. We chip and haulEverything leaves with us unless you want the chips for mulch or the rounds cut for firewood — tell us at the quote.
  5. We grind the stumpUsually the same visit. Twelve to sixteen inches below grade so the spot can be sodded or planted.
  6. We clean up and walk it againYou look at it before you pay.

What drives the price

FactorWhy it mattersEffect
Height and spreadAnything over forty feet means more rigging and more time aloftHigher
What is underneathA pool, fence, roof or power line means every piece comes down on a ropeHigher
Truck and chipper accessIf we can pull up to the drop zone the job moves; back-yard-only means hand carryingHigher
Trunk diameter at the baseDrives both the cutting time and the stump grindingHigher

A dead tree is not an emergency until it is

A standing dead tree gets more dangerous every month as the wood dries and gets brittle. It is far cheaper and safer to take down while the structure is still predictable. If you have one you have been putting off, that is the one to call about first.

Questions we get asked

Do you remove the stump too?

Usually on the same visit, ground twelve to sixteen inches below grade so you can sod or plant over it. We quote it as a line item so you can decide.

Will you damage my yard getting the equipment in?

We plan access at the quote, mark irrigation before we dig or drive, and put down protection where we need to. If there is a real risk of rutting we will tell you up front rather than after.

Can you remove a tree close to the house?

Yes — that is what sectional removal and rigging are for. Those jobs cost more because they take longer, not because they are unusual.

What about the roots?

Grinding handles the stump and the major surface roots in the grinding radius. Deeper roots decay in place. If you are re-sodding the area we will tell you what to expect as they break down.

Do you handle storm damage?

Yes, and that is the exception to normal scheduling. Call rather than filling in the form.
