Stump grinding

Ground twelve to sixteen inches below grade so the spot can be sodded, planted, or simply forgotten about.

Why grind rather than leave it

A stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, a mowing obstacle, and a slow-motion sinkhole — as the wood decays the soil above it settles and you end up with a depression in the lawn two or three years later.

It is also where new growth comes back from on species that sucker, and it will happily host termites and fungus while it rots.

Grinding is quick, it is not seasonal, and it is the step that lets the rest of the yard be finished rather than worked around.

How deep, and what is left behind

We grind to twelve to sixteen inches below grade as standard, which is deep enough to sod over. If you are planting a replacement tree in the same spot, tell us — that needs to go deeper and wider, and it is a different quote.

Grinding produces a large volume of chips, more than most people expect. You have three options and we will ask which you want: haul it all away, backfill the hole with the chips and top with soil, or leave the pile for you to use as mulch.

The ground directly over a ground stump stays slightly different from the rest of the yard for a season or two as the remaining chips break down. If you are sodding over it we bring in topsoil rather than sodding straight onto chip fill.

Grinding is not stump removal

Worth being clear about the difference. Grinding turns the stump and the major surface roots into chips down to about sixteen inches. Full extraction — pulling the root ball out whole — leaves a crater, needs heavy equipment, and is rarely worth it on a residential lot. When someone says stump removal, grinding is almost always what they actually want.

Questions we get asked

Can I plant grass right over it?

Yes, once we backfill with topsoil rather than chips. Sod laid straight onto chip fill roots poorly and settles unevenly.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

Only if we grind deeper and wider than standard. Tell us at the quote and we will price it that way.

How long does it take?

Most residential stumps are under an hour. A very large oak with a heavy root flare can take a good part of a morning.

Do you need to get a machine into the back yard?

Usually. We check gate width at the quote — standard machines need around thirty-six inches, and there are narrower options if yours is tighter.

Will it damage my sprinkler lines?

We mark heads and lines before grinding. If a line runs directly under the stump we will tell you before we start.
