St. Augustine sod in north Texas
The broad-bladed, deep green grass most people picture when they picture a North Texas lawn. It handles shade better than bermuda and it is what most established Carrollton and Plano yards already have.
What it is good at
Filtered shade, north-facing yards, and lawns under mature canopy where bermuda has already thinned out. It spreads by above-ground runners and knits into a dense mat quickly when it is happy.
What it will not tolerate
Heavy foot traffic, deep dry shade, and hard freezes. St. Augustine is the least cold-hardy of the three and a severe winter can set it back. It also needs more water than zoysia to stay green through August.
Looking after it once it is down
Water deeply and less often once it roots — shallow daily watering is the most common way people kill a new St. Augustine lawn. Mow high, around three to four inches; cutting it short is what lets weeds in.
How it compares
| Grass | Sun needed | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| St. Augustine | Part shade to sun | Filtered shade and matching existing lawns |
| Zoysia | Part shade to sun | Mixed sun and shade, traffic, previously failed lawns |
| Bermuda | Full sun only | Open sunny yards and best value per square foot |
Not sure which you need? That is the conversation we have at the quote, and it starts with how many hours of direct sun the yard actually gets — not how many you think it gets.
Getting it installed
Whichever variety you choose, the prep is what decides the outcome: stripping the old turf, correcting grade, breaking up compacted clay, and making sure the sprinklers will actually reach the new turf. The full sequence is on the sod installation page.
We install St. Augustine across The Colony, Frisco, Plano, Carrollton, Little Elm, Lewisville, McKinney, Prosper.
