Sod Installation

Most failed lawns in North Texas fail because of what's under the grass: heavy, compacted clay, thin builder topsoil, or a grade that sends water toward the house. Sod laid straight onto hard ground struggles to root and dries out in the first heat wave.

Our process starts with taking out the old turf and weeds, then tilling, adding soil and grading before a single piece of sod goes down. The result is a lawn that roots in fast and stays green.

What's Included

  • Removal of old, dead or weedy turf
  • Tilling to loosen compacted soil
  • Adding fresh soil to improve the root zone
  • Grading so water drains away from the foundation
  • Rolling the bed smooth and level
  • Laying fresh sod with tight, staggered seams
  • Watering instructions to get the new lawn established
Our Process

How It Works

  1. Remove old turf

Existing grass and weeds are cut out or scalped down so the new sod has clean contact with the soil.

  2. Till & amend

Compacted clay is tilled and fresh soil is brought in by the wheelbarrow-load to build a better root zone.

  3. Grade & roll

The bed is shaped so water drains away from the house, then rolled smooth and firm.

  4. Lay sod

Fresh sod goes down in a staggered, brick-like pattern with seams pushed tight and edges cut clean along walks and beds.

  5. Water in

The new lawn needs a deep soaking right away. We explain exactly how to water it for the first few weeks.

Local Know-How

Choosing grass & timing for North Texas

Bermuda grass loves full sun and handles heat, drought and foot traffic well, but it thins out quickly in shade. St. Augustine has wide blades and handles partial shade better, which makes it popular under mature trees; it needs more water and can be bothered by chinch bugs and gray leaf spot. Zoysia makes a dense, carpet-like lawn, tolerates some shade, and grows more slowly — so it takes longer to repair if damaged.

Warm-season sod roots fastest when it is actively growing, roughly from mid-spring through late summer. It can be installed in fall as long as it has several weeks to root before the first hard freeze. Many North Texas cities have watering schedules, so check your city's rules for establishing new sod before installation.

For the first week or two, keep the sod and the soil just beneath it moist, usually with short watering cycles once or twice a day in summer heat. Then water less often but more deeply to push roots down. The first mow is typically after two to three weeks, once the sod is rooted and doesn't lift when tugged.

FAQ

Sod Installation FAQ

What type of sod is best in North Texas?

Bermuda for full sun and heavy use, St. Augustine for yards with partial shade from mature trees, and Zoysia for a dense, carpet-like lawn with moderate shade tolerance. We'll recommend a grass based on the sun and use your yard actually gets.

Can sod be installed over existing grass?

It shouldn't be. Old turf and weeds keep the new sod from making contact with the soil, so it roots poorly. Removing the old turf and preparing the soil is part of doing it right.

How soon can I walk on or mow new sod?

Keep traffic light for the first couple of weeks. The first mow is usually after two to three weeks, once the sod has rooted and doesn't lift when you tug a corner.

Do you prep the soil?

Yes. Soil prep — removing old turf, tilling, adding soil, grading and rolling — is the heart of every sod installation we do.

When is the best time of year to lay sod in DFW?

Mid-spring through late summer, while warm-season grass is actively growing. Fall installs work if there are several weeks left before the first hard freeze.
